I suffered through several health challenges myself and in 2012 the effects of too much stress snuck up on me. I had no idea how silent and dangerous stress can be. Let me share my story and how I ended up where I am now and how I can help you overcome your own battle.

THIS IS MY STORY

I have been working in the health and fitness industry since 2007. I grew up in Ireland and after a few years’ experience at a local gym I set out to experience what it would be like to live in another country. Ireland had been hit hard with a financial crisis in 2008, so jobs were few and far between. I always enjoyed travelling so it was the perfect time. I moved to Vancouver Canada in 2011. Upon arriving in Vancouver I was blown away from day one. The active lifestyle and beautiful beaches, right beside stunning mountains….this place has it all and I was taking full advantage.  Soon after arriving I landed myself a job working as a personal trainer at a popular gym downtown Vancouver. Clients that I loved, I was taking courses to expand my expertise, training daily, and building my business.  Basically, I was doing what I love and living in one of the most beautiful cities in the world; life was good.

Unfortunately, the good times didn’t last long. Just 11 months into my new life and on the road to setting up my own business I ran into visa issues that caused a lot of stress. I thought I had the stress under control but soon learned that was not the case.,  One afternoon, out of nowhere I had my first panic attack.  I had never had one before and had no idea what was going on.  They became frequent and at the time I thought there was something wrong with my heart but later figured out my body was having a normal reaction to all stress that I was under. Before I knew what was happening, the worry that I possibly had a serious heart condition fed the stress putting me in a vicious cycle that spiraled and triggered a panic disorder to where my nervous system was stuck in flight or fight mode 24/7.  My symptoms now included depersonalisation, derealisation, digestive issues, insomnia, brain fog, anxiety; the list goes on and on.  I had no idea how to fix it and after many visits to the Doctor, I felt I was not getting any closer to finding an answer. Here I was thinking am living this health lifestyle of clean eating and exercise but it wasn’t the answer for all the stress I was dealing with. I was on a downward spiral, business was falling apart and I had no option other than to give in to medication. I was scared to start medication but I started knowing this is just a crutch to help me get back on my feet. I took the bare minimum just to take the edge off panic attacks and this allowed me to take steps forward. I was now determine to get out of this hell I was living in.

This determination to getting better lead down a path to understand stress and its effects on the body. Here I learned that the symptoms I was experiencing such as Depersonalisation and Panic Attacks was all anxiety related, I knew there and then I would recover. Knowing you can recover is the most important step here when dealing with mental stress, because the fear feeds the problem. When we think of stress we usually think of work, relationships, financial stress etc. This is just one area mental/emotional but stress is a huge umbrella that covers many areas such as biomechanics stress, biochemical, environmental, electromagnetic to name a few. This all accumulates and the body and has a negative effect on your whole physiology.  I set out to eliminate as much stress as possible that was in my control. For mental emotional stress which was probably my main contributor, I done lots of distraction work to keep my mind off the worry. I did this by learning new skills such as photography, hand balancing daily (this took a lot of daily focus and helped keep me focused as I could practice it anywhere), japanese calligraphy and many other practices. As I was on this path living a healthy lifestyle and staying positive was paying off. I put a lot of work into improving my sleep, this is when your body can repair itself and a very important part of recovery. Keeping myself busy by not giving in to the anxiety I started to see results. My confidence started to come back and business picked up again. Around this time I discovered Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN).

FDN practitioners use functional lab work to seek out hidden stressors within Hormone, Immune, Digestion and Detoxification systems. These are known as the 4 main pillars. The lab work is used to find any malfunction with in the 4 pillars and look for healing opportunities. Once any of these 4 pillars start to break down, illness takes place in many forms. You can look at these as the four legs of a chair, if one leg goes they all go. This approach made perfect sense when dealing with stress, we tend to over look the hidden stressors but FDN shines the spot light on these guys to seeks out parasites, contested livers, the build up of oxidative stress, dysbiosis etc.

It was a long journey back to recovery, it took a lot of hard work. Now out of the deep end I was left wanting to learn more about managing stress and living a holistic lifestyle to build a robust system that is able to fight off the stressors life throws at us. Building on what I had learned, I became a certified Holistic Lifestyle Coach (HLC) and Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist (FDN) under the Chek Institute. Applying the principles that I learned from taking HLC got me on the fast road to recovery and gave me principles to live by. It taught me that there was a gap in my understanding of what it meant to be healthy.  I realized being healthy wasn’t just about exercising and eating clean but also making sure the 4 pillars are working optimally as well as mental/emotional health.

I work with people dealing with all sorts of symptoms such as skin conditions, weightless, weight gain, panic attacks,IBS to name a few, Our goal at Adrenal Repair is to help them get to the underlying cause of the issue and not just treat symptoms. We want to eliminate them by using the FDN model DRESS for health and success! Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress and Supplements to support the process. As a FDN practitioner, I’m like your personal health detective. The main focus here is to get to the underlying cause of the problem, not to just treat the symptom or even the test results. The test results are used as clues to find the root of the issue on hand.

Five years after my initial panic attack, I have found a way to alleviate stress and build a robust body inside and out.  Let’s face it, there is no avoiding it, shit will hit the fan and you better be prepared!  So I created my 90day Adrenal Repair program so you can eliminate your symptoms by getting to the root cause and build a strong immunes system so you can face stress live a healthier lifestyle.

Doctors where throwing pills at me and I refused knowing that wasn’t the answer. In the end I had to give in. I took the bare minimum, just enough to take the edge off the symptoms allowing me to get to work on my recovery. This way I could tell when I was taking the right steps instead of loading up on meds leaving me numb and not knowing when I was making progress. These struggles deepened my interest in restoring health by using a holistic approach,  I wanted to be in control of my body and not having to rely on meds for the rest of my life.
